3.0 Cultural Support

IBN provides a range of other services to IBN Members, including language projects and assistance with archiving family records and researching family histories. We have a linguist dedicated to helping IBN Members record, share and preserve their languages, stories and culture. Contact the IBN Language, Heritage and Culture Coordinator on 1800 014 401.

Lore travel

Up to $500 per IBN Community Member for fuel and food in support of lore time activities, endorsed by an IBN Elder or IBN Representative Corporation Director.

Required documentation:

Supplier quotes or invoices including supplier payment details.

Exclusions / conditions:

Applications must be endorsed by an IBN Elder, IBN Board Director, or Director of an IBN Representative Corporation.

Loss of earnings while attending Lore business cannot be claimed.

Cultural recording

IBN encourages and supports the recording of language, dance, singing, and knowledge of land or any other cultural heritage of the IBN people. IBN will pay IBN Members $500 per day for cultural recording activities.

Exclusions / conditions:

All applications must be approved by the IBN Language, Culture and Heritage Coordinator.

Member applications must be endorsed by an IBN Elder, IBN Board Director, or Director of an IBN Representative Corporation. An Australian Business Number or ATO “Statement by a Supplier” may be required.

Funeral support

Recognising the cultural importance of funerals to the IBN Community, the Funeral Support program contributes to the costs of arranging funerals for deceased IBN members, billeting family members, and travel costs for IBN members to attend funerals.

Applications for funeral travel must be lodged before 4.30pm on Wednesday and no less than four days prior to travel.

Funeral arrangements: Up to $1,000 to the person organising a funeral for a deceased IBN Community Member. Benefits are to be used as a contribution towards the funeral service, wake, funeral director, coffin, catering and flowers. Blankets may be provided as an additional benefit.

Required documentation:

Supplier quotes or invoices including supplier payment details.

Funeral notice and evidence of family relationship to the deceased person.

Evidence of application to other available funding sources, such as other Aboriginal Trusts, or the WA government’s Bereavement Assistance Program.

The applicant may need to complete a budget worksheet in consultation with an IBN Field Officer.

IBN members are encouraged to seek additional funeral support from other sources, such as, other Aboriginal trusts, Qantas compassionate flight discounts, insurance policy, and/or the WA government’s Bereavement Assistance Program administered by the Department of Child Protection and Family Support. Speak to an IBN Field Officer if you need help accessing these services.

Hosting family: $200 food voucher for IBN Community Members who have family staying with them for a funeral of a deceased IBN Member.

Required documentation:

Supplier quotes or invoices including supplier payment details.

Funeral notice and evidence of family relationship to the deceased person.

Evidence of application to other available funding sources, such as other Aboriginal Trusts, or the WA government’s Bereavement Assistance Program.

The applicant may need to complete a budget worksheet in consultation with an IBN Field Officer.

Immediate family funeral: Up to $550 in travel assistance for an IBN Member to attend the funeral of an IBN Member who is in their immediate family. Assistance may be used for domestic airfares, bus fares, fuel and food vouchers, funeral clothing. 1 nights’ accommodation for members with a disability.

Evidence of application to other available funding sources, such as other Aboriginal Trusts, or the WA government’s Bereavement Assistance Program.

Funeral clothing: Men’s and boys’ clothing includes trousers, shirts, socks, underwear, jacket and shoes. Women’s and girls’ clothing includes trousers, dresses, skirts, underwear, scarves, coat or jacket and shoes. Infant’s clothing includes baby clothing, baby shoes and nappies.
