Closing the gap in healthcare in the Shire of RoebourneAbove: The IBN Nurse, Dorothea Skelly, helping the IBN community access better healthcare
IBN funds a full time nurse to provide expert health services exclusively to members of the IBN Community living in the Roebourne and Karratha aresa.
IBN works closely with the Pilbara Health Network (PHN) to deliver this new service, and the IBN Nurse, Dorothea Skelly, is be based in the PHN office in Karratha.
The IBN Nurse is a bit different from a regular nurse; Dorothea is a ‘Physician Assistant’, which means she can work in any medical discipline as directed by a doctor.
Physician Assistants can perform patient examinations and referrals, order and interpret tests, assist in surgery and perform minor surgical procedures.
IBN CEO, Grant Bussell, said the new service provides easier access to medical help for IBN people.
“The health of the Yinhawangka, Banyjima and Nyiyaparli people is a top priority for IBN,” he said.
“This project is a major investment for us in the Roebourne and Karratha areas to close the gap in health for our community. The IBN Nurse works closely with our families to achieve this.”
IBN people can contact the nurse directly on the phone number below, or through one of our Field Officers if they have concerns about their health.
Dorothea conducts home visits; holds weekly clinics and regular health workshops.
