IBN Language Program: Introducing Word of the Week
Language is more than words – it carries identity, history, and connection. IBN is working to ensure that these vital cultural threads are not only preserved, but shared and strengthened for future generations. At its heart, IBN’s Language Program is a project that aims to connect people with IBN languages, including our Members and the wider community.
A key feature of the program has launched today! We’re thrilled to share our Word of the Week series, introducing simple words and pronunciation in an easy, engaging format through a selection of short videos.
As traditionally oral languages, spelling can vary, so at this stage of the project, we are generously guided by Miluranpa Banyjima Elder and IBN Member May Byrne, who also sits on the IBN Language Governance Group. For consistency, we have adopted May’s spelling of Banyjima words. May also appears in the videos, sharing her knowledge and demonstrating pronunciation first hand.
While the first video series introduces the basics, it’s only the beginning! The long-term vision goes even further.
Future releases include comprehensive learning resources which will aim to support the long-term preservation of IBN languages. Additionally, we will make them accessible to Members, as well as anyone interested in the rich culture and history they represent.
By building strong foundations now, the program aims to develop more advanced learning resources over time, with the goal of created structured language programs that could eventually be delivered in schools.
In doing so, IBN hopes to help safeguard the continued use and understanding of spoken language for generations to come.
